Older Boy Programs
The following program activities for older Scouts are offered each week at both Camp Saffran and Camp Spencer.
Discover SCUBA (Wed. night)
This program is run by the Aquatics Connections, Inc. every Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at Camp Spencer’s pool. Scouts must be 12 years old and be a swimmer to participate. SCUBA gear is provided; it is run in 4 feet of water or less in a 2-hour period (depending on group size). This is a GREAT intro to the full SCUBA program. Cost is $20 per Scout. Interested Scouts must register at Sunday’s check-in.
SCUBA Certification (all week)
This course is run at Guppy Gulch in Delta, PA by certified dive instructors. Transportation is provided by the camp staff or leaders. This week-long program runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Reading and studying is required in the evening. A written exam must be passed on Friday to complete course. Upon completion, Scouts receive the PDIC SCUBA certification. Scouts must be 14 years old and older. Cost is $225 per Scout.
BSA Lifeguard (All week)
Open to Scouts 14 years old and older. Leaders are welcome. Scouts must have completed Swimming Merit Badge. This is a week-long course. Scouts must pass several skill tests to become certified. CPR certification is required to complete the course and earn the Lifeguard card. Time will be spent at both the pool and pier. There is no additional cost for this activity.
Lost Pines Wilderness Adventure
The Lost Pines Wilderness is a high adventure program for Scouts 13 years old and older who think they have done it all. This program has been created with today’s challenges and technology in mind. The Lost Pines Wilderness Outpost is under the direction of Mike Sulewski who was responsible for developing the Camp Spencer First-Year Camper program in 2000. This adventure will explore the camp’s back country, along with trips off camp property that will physically and mentally challenge each Scout’s outdoor skills.

The program will be conducted in the afternoons and evenings only, allowing Scouts to sleep in their campsite with their Troop and participate in morning program at camp. Scouts have time in the morning to 8 participate in C.O.P.E. or merit badges. Scouts who successfully complete this program will earn the CIT certificate and the prestigious Lost Pines patch. Cost of the week-long program is $40. Scouts participating in this program must be at least 2nd Class, successfully completed a swimmer’s test, have completed one week of Scout summer camp in the past, and be physically fit for rigorous high adventure activities.
Golf Merit Badge
This session will include a one-hour clinic with a golf professional, nine holes of golf, and dinner on the course. The additional cost for this activity is $40, payable when you arrive in camp.
Pre-Counselor-In-Training (all week)
For 13 year old Scouts who want to learn about being on the camp staff. The Scout will participate as a staff member, while your Troop is in camp. The Scout will live with his Troop at night, but serve in staff positions during the day. The Scout will be serving in several positions during the week so he can truly get the flavor of camp staff life. Register with the Camp Director at check-in on Sunday. There is no additional cost for this activity.
Project C.O.P.E. (all week)
For Scouts who are at least 13 years old and older, the challenge of the C.O.P.E. course is varied and can be a great test. The challenges are physical as well as mental. The Broad Creek C.O.P.E. course offers 19 different challenge stations. The program is run either each morning or afternoon depending on scheduling. The sessions are limited to 24 Scouts each. The fee for the C.O.P.E. program is $20 per Scout.
