Protection of Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation

In August of 2004 the Baltimore Area Council, in an effort to protect Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation, began a process to have land placed into conservation easements. These different easement programs will preserve Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation as a wooded and undeveloped area in perpetuity.

In January of 2005, 390 acres of the approx. 1700 acre property was included in the Harford County Agricultural Preservation Program. For this the Baltimore Area Council receive an amount $1.5 million. These funds allowed the council to create the Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation Endowment Fund to provide the resources to maintain and fund future capital needs of the property.

More recently the Baltimore Area Council was able to complete the Federal Forest Legacy Program, placing an additional 327 acres under the protection of conservation easements. In doing so $3,255,000 of funds were placed in the Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation Endowment Fund.

Currently the Baltimore Area Council is pursuing placement of the final 900 acres into Maryland’s Project Open Space. In doing so, 100% of our beautiful property will be protected.

A conservation easement allows the Baltimore Area Council to continue the ownership and use of Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation while realizing some of the value of our property now by restricting development of that property in the future. As part of the negotiations of these easements the Baltimore Area Council is afforded approx. 30 acres of development including our current 10 acre footprint.
